Training and Support Groups

Amaze offers training courses, workshops and support groups for parents of children with special needs. These groups and courses give parents the opportunity to share experiences and learn more about particular topics. We always aim to co-deliver our courses with parent trainers as we believe that the best can be achieved for children when their parents expertise and experience is brought together with practitioner skill and knowledge.

Triple P Positive Parenting Course

Adapted for parents of children with special needs and disabilities, we run a Triple P course for parents of younger children and another Triple P course for parents of teens. The courses are for parents interested in looking at their child's behaviour and in finding ways of dealing with it and helping family life run more smoothly.

Triple P courses combine group sessions with individual telephone calls and are delivered by trainers who are parents of children with special needs too. The courses are free.

To find out when the next Triple P course is, look at our events calendar.

The Insiders' Guide to bringing up children with special needs

Insiders' Guide is a six session course that focuses on what it means to be a parent of a child with special needs. It aims to build parents' resilience so you are well placed to enjoy the journey bringing up your children. It offers a structure within which parents can share and explore their travels so far, celebrate the skills they have acquired along the way, map their needs and practise possible strategies for building their skills and strengthening their resolve to carry on. The courses are co-facilitated in order to bring parent expertise and experience together with practitioner skill and knowledge.

Download a flyer about the Insiders' Guide.

There are five separate courses for parents of:
Under 5s; Under 12s; Teens; children with Ongoing Health Care Needs; children with Severe Learning Difficulties.

And we try to run one course every school term. You can find out which free parent course is happening next by looking at the Calendar of Events

We also run a course for parents and practitioners interested in learning more about how to co-facilitate an Insiders' Guide course. Find out about the future events and courses here.

The programme of courses was originally funded by the Parenting Fund, and was designed and developed according to what parents told us they needed. We ran five courses, trained a team of parents and practitioners to co-facilitate them and commissioned the University of Brighton to evaluate the project for us. The Insiders' Guide Evaluation Report confirmed that the courses are a really effective way of supporting parents. And feedback from parents and the course facilitators has been very positive with some parents describing it as a life-changing experience.

Parents with teenagers group

Amaze runs regular support groups for parents of teenagers with special needs. The groups give parents the chance to get together with other parents in a similar situation, and to share and learn from another's experience. If you would be interested in coming along to one of these groups, call us on 772289.
