How the Compass helps families
Amaze plays a key role in influencing local services by examining what families tell us and reporting to local service providers and policy makers. For example:
- In 2009 we were asked to identify parents of children on The Compass who could contribute to numerous consultations and research projects, including Brighton and Hove City Council's play spaces and NHS Brighton and Hove's maternity care. Please click here to see a full list of our consultation work.
- In 2008 the Children and Young People's Trust (CYPT) commissioned the Compass Team to report in detail on the population of disabled children in Brighton and Hove and on families' needs for short breaks and related services. These reports are helping the city target resources and plan the delivery of 'Aiming High' initiatives. Read Compass reports in the Publications area of our Resources section.
- In 2007 we found that many families with children on The Compass experience multiple disadvantages, especially those living in more deprived areas of the city. This analysis helped Anchor Staying Put secure funding to extend the fuel poverty service they ran for adults with disabilities to families with disabled children
- In 2006 The Compass Team identified, on average, two to three children a month who were likely to be eligible for, but were not receiving, Disability Living Allowance (DLA). These families were alerted to the possibility of claiming and to the support available from Amaze
- In 2005 the commissioning team for Brighton and Hove Children & Young People's Trust (CYPT) asked us provide a picture of the numbers and types of families with disabled children and where they live in the city. This core information helped the organisation plan the type and scale of services they needed to commission
- In 2004 we helped Brighton and Hove Inclusion Project (BHIP) to plan the locations for new after school clubs (one third of places are for children with special needs). We provided information on the areas with most children on The Compass and when the clubs were ready to open, we wrote to families with children on The Compass living nearby, to invite them to the clubs
