3 new Compass Card Activities!
We launched three more inclusive Compass Card Activities for Compass Card holders in the Amazing Zone at TAKEPART Launch Day on 19 June 2010. Here are the details:
Table tennis – Hollingbury Table Tennis Club is providing term-time table tennis coaching and practice sessions in Bevendean for over 8s and adults. Monday coaching for 8-18s is 6.30-8.30pm and the adult practice is Sundays 7-9.30pm. Both are at Bevendean Primary School. Compass Card holders get the first session at the club free. After that, the coaching session costs £3.50 and the practice session costs £3 for members, £4 for non-members. Call Steve Chambers on 07772 994048 or visit www.hollingburyttc.co.uk for more info.
Karate and kick boxing – Sama Organisation's providing classes across the city after school, in the evenings and at weekends. Free gym and junior fitness at 2 more gyms
We added another two gyms to the Compass Card offer on Saturday 19 June - especially good news for Compass Card holders over 12 living in East Brighton! Like Prince Regent Swimming Complex, Stanley Deason Leisure Centre and Moulsecoomb Community Leisure Centre will be providing free Junior Fitness Sessions for 12-15s and free gym to 16-19 year olds. Deans Leisure Centre in Woodingdean, King Alfred Leisure Centre in Hove and Sussexsport at the University of Sussex Falmer campus already provide free gym use to 16-19 year old Compass Card holders. The only cost is the induction where centre staff demonstrate how to use the equipment safely and give the card holder an opportunity to try it out. After that, gym visits are free – the card holder just has to show the Compass Card at the pay desk. The induction needs to be booked and paid for in advance – either in person or over the 'phone (make it clear the booking's for a Compass Card holder). There's also a form that needs to be filled out before the induction. It covers things like health and safety and the parent carer will need to sign it.
Early Learning Centre discounts
One of the latest offers on the Compass Card is a 10% discount at Early Learning Centre (ELC). All you have to do is show a valid Compass Card when you visit ELC in Churchill Square, Brighton (the child who's the Compass Card holder will need to be with you). You'll be issued with an ELC discount card which gives a 10% discount on all store items – apart from sale, promotional lines or TP metalwork. The ELC discount card lasts for a year and can be used in ELC stores across the country. If you want another card when the year's up, you'll need to show a valid Compass Card in the Brighton store to renew.
Four delicious new offers at Pizza Express
The results of our Compass Card survey last year showed eating out was the top choice when families were asked what they'd like to see added to the card – so our latest new offer's a 2 for 1 deal on main courses at all four local Pizza Express restaurants - Jubilee Street, 4 The Waterfront at Brighton Marina, 22 Prince Albert Street (the offer at Prince Albert Street only applies till 30 November 2010) and 107 Church Road, Hove. If there's a difference in price, the cheapest main course is free and the offer applies to families or groups of up to eight. So if you have a family of eight for example, you pay for four main courses and get the four cheapest free. The offer applies at all times, including weekends and to all main courses on the menu. All you have to do is show your Compass Card as soon as you arrive. Enjoy!
Olympos Burgess Hill (the Triangle)
We've confirmed a new offer with Olympos Burgess Hill (the Triangle). There's a discount for the Compass Card holder - and a carer or a friend goes free. The facility has 'Aztec Fun Pools' with flumes, beach area and outdoor heated pool and a traditional 25 metre 'fitness/competition pool'. Card holders pay £3.15 to use all the pools at Olympos, or £1.25 if they just want to use the 25 metre pool. The offer starts in time for Half Term – on Saturday 29 May 2010.
Other Compass Card benefits
Free swimming
Free swimming for the Compass Card holder and up to four others at King Alfred, Prince Regent and St. Luke's pools.
Free gym
Once an induction has been paid for at King Alfred, Prince Regent, The Deans Leisure Centre or Sussexsport at the University of Sussex's Falmer site, 16-19s can use the gyms for free. 12-15s can also use cardio-vascular equipment free at Prince Regent at certain times, after an induction. We extended this offer on 19 June 2010 - see 'What's new?' above for more information.
Free CDs, DVDs and audio books at city libraries
If Compass Card holders are library members, they can register at their local library for free CDs, DVDs and audio books which are normally charged for. Find out more about our local libraries.
Free film screenings
Parent carers tickets at the Duke of York's and Odeon cinemas are free (one per Compass Card holder). There are also autism-friendly screenings at the Duke's every few weeks - a great way of introducing children with special needs to the fun of the movies. Lights and sound are low and children can move around or make a noise if they want to. Check our calendar of events for details.
Discounted soft play
Compass Card holders visiting Monkey Bizness in Lewes pay half the usual entry price. Westow's World of Play in Hove provides a £1.50 discount for Compass Card holders – including its special needs session on Fridays from 6.15pm to 8.15pm. Funplex in Bevendean gives a 50 pence discount to card holders. The only exception is their special needs session on Sundays from 9am till 10am which costs £3.50. There's a 40% discount for card holders at Sussex Central YMCA's Toddlers Gym at the Y Centre in Hove.
Sea Life Brighton
Sea Life Brighton gives Compass Card holders its 'disabled' rate - £8.50 for 3-14s, £10.50 for over 15s and one parent carer per card holder goes free. For information on group discounts, call 08712 226934.
Farm discounts
Get your wellies on! Compass Card holders get a 50 pence discount at Stoneywish Nature Reserve in Ditchling, Spring Barn Farm Park in Lewes and Washbrooks Farm in Hurstpierpoint and one parent carer goes free.
Ten Pin Bowling
Brighton Bowlplex at Brighton Marina provides an off-peak discount to card holders and parent carers. The discount's available Monday-Friday from 10am till 6pm – except during bank holidays and school holidays. Standard rates apply at other times.
Shows
The Theatre Royal Brighton, Komedia and The Dome provide Compass Card holders and their families with special offers on selected shows. Offers are often last minute, so parents need to provide an email address if they have one so we can tell them about the latest deals. If you don't use email, call the helpline on 01273 772289 or check 'What's new?' at the top of this page for details on the latest offers.
Compass Card Activities
Amaze launched its first two pilot 'Compass Card Activities' in February 2010 – Story Magic, a monthly sensory storytelling session for children with Profound and Multiple Learning Disabilities (PMLD) or visual impairment; and inclusive trampolining classes from Sussex Central YMCA. In June 2010, we introduced three more - table tennis in Bevendean with Hollingbury Table Tennis Club; karate and kick boxing across the city with Sama; and a Saturday morning circus skills class in Hangleton for 11-25s with Bandbazi Circus Theatre (see 'What's new?' above for more details).
Each Compass Card Activity provides discounted prices, if there's a charge; coaches or teachers with special needs experience; information that helps your child access more mainstream activities if they want to; and the opportunity to provide feedback.

And that's not all...
Once your child is registered on The Compass and has a Compass Card, Amaze can send you information about the events, services and issues that matter to you. For example, if we hear about a new support group for children with ADHD, we can send a flyer to all the families of children with ADHD on the Compass.
We will also send you a regular copy of our termly newsletter, Out of Amaze and invite you to take part in relevant consultations so you have the chance to get your voice heard.
